Former Liberian President George Manneh Weah says his administration acted to address drug-related challenges whenever they emerged, while urging the current government to take decisive steps to combat Liberia’s growing narcotics problem.
Speaking in an interview with Homeland TV in the USA, Weah said his government responded to what he described as drug issues during its time in office and expressed confidence that the current administration should do the same. The former president said illegal drugs pose a serious threat to every society, warning that substance abuse has damaging social consequences and requires sustained government intervention.
Weah expressed hope that the administration of President Joseph Boakai would effectively confront the country’s drug crisis, describing the fight against narcotics as a national responsibility that demands decisive action. Despite the praises for his own administration, then President Weah and his administration loss a US 100-Million drug case that shocked the entire nation.
In June this year, Liberian authorities seized nearly 4 metric tons of cocaine worth an estimated $317 million in Duazon, marking the largest drug bust in the country’s history. President Joseph Boakai subsequently dismissed a dozen government and law enforcement officials following investigations linking senior personnel to the trafficking network.
Recently, Liberian authorities burned 4.2 metric tons of cocaine worth an estimated $336 million on July 30, 2026, marking the country’s largest-ever drug destruction. This followed a record-breaking seizure in Duazon outside Monrovia that unfortunately also involved local police corruption.
A separate 237kg shipment worth over $19 million seized at Roberts International Airport in June was also destroyed. Charges were brought against high-ranking officers, including the chief of highway patrol and head of major crimes, for allegedly using official vehicles to escort the smuggled cocaine. The massive haul originated from a transnational network, leading to the arrest of a Serbian citizen and a dual Colombian-Spanish national.
