The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has resolved to mandate its leadership to immediately engage the Union’s legal team to determine appropriate legal remedies over concerns raised by members. The decision was reached following an extended meeting chaired by PUL President Julius Kanubah during which members debated a motion regarding the way forward.
in response to the recent public pronouncement by the Government of Liberia, through the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police Col. Gregory Coleman linking the Liberian media to alleged payments from a “drug cartel” to sway and influence investigations into the seizure of over half a billion dollars’ worth of illicit cocaine.
During the deliberations, members agreed that the Union’s legal team would assess the allegations and advise on the appropriate legal course of action. It was also resolved that the leadership would report back to the membership within one week with the legal team’s recommendations.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of a motion mandating the leadership to contact the lawyers with immediate effect and seek appropriate remedies. A motion for adjournment was subsequently carried, bringing the meeting to a close. The meeting was attended by representatives of media institutions, members of PUL auxiliary bodies, and other stakeholders within Liberia’s media community.
