The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has intensified calls for the immediate reopening of the University of Liberia (UL) and the restoration of effective classroom activities, citing prolonged academic disruptions and challenges affecting students.
SUP says the situation at Liberia’s premier public university threatens the academic future of thousands of students. The student-based political organization has raised concerns about deteriorating classroom facilities, poor sanitation, inadequate laboratory equipment, limited internet access, insufficient security, and transportation challenges between university campuses.
Although the University’s academic calendar identified August 25 for the resumption of classes, SUP argues that announcing a reopening date alone does not address the underlying administrative, financial, infrastructural, and labor-related problems affecting effective teaching and learning.
The organization has therefore called on the University of Liberia Administration, Board of Trustees, and Government of Liberia to take urgent steps to restore normal academic activities and provide an environment conducive to learning.
SUP has also mobilized students and supporters of public education to assemble at the University’s Capitol Hill Campus on August 25 as part of its campaign for accountability and the restoration of regular academic activities.
The latest demand adds to growing concerns over repeated disruptions at the University of Liberia and their impact on students. Former SUP Chairman Emeritus Martin K. N. Kollie Tingban has similarly argued that prolonged disruptions affect students, parents, families, and Liberia’s broader development.
