The House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into the railroad operations in Montserrado District #1 based on public safety concerns. The investigation was prompted by a viral video that depicted a train approaching a rural area in Montserrado, where local vendors were seen using the tracks to transport charcoal and other goods to a nearby market. The footage showed a chaotic scene, with people fleeing as a train carrying iron ore approached.
This incident led Representative Rugie Barry of Montserrado County Electoral District #1 to highlight the increasing safety risks faced by communities living and working near the railroad corridors. During the discussion, several lawmakers addressed issues impacting their communities. Representative Dickson Seboe of District #16 in Montserrado County mentioned that his constituents are also affected by this matter.
Barry pointed out that the concession company operating the railroad is failing to fulfill its corporate social responsibility to the community, indicating the lack of safety measures to protect residents. She emphasized that those living near the railroad are suffering due to the train’s operations, and there has been little effort to support these communities.
Following the discussion, lawmakers instructed the leadership to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the safety compliance of these concession companies. According to the plenary, the investigation will focus on adherence to public safety standards, the effects of railroad activities on surrounding communities, and the steps being taken to prevent accidents and safeguard lives and property.
The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting the public welfare by rigorously enforcing safety regulations across all infrastructure projects in Liberia. China Union Liberia is a Chinese company operating in Liberia, specifically involved in iron ore mining in Bong County. The company has been at the center of controversy, with allegations of breaching social obligations and environmental violations. In 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Liberia granted China Union a temporary permit to resume operations after partial fine payment, but also ordered the closure of the mine due to multiple environmental violations.
