A grieving mother is calling for justice after her son, Mathew Mulbah, was allegedly shot and killed by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) in the LCC Community, Congo Town. Residents told reporters that the late Mulbah had been behaving unusually and had allegedly threatened neighbors on the day of the incident. However, some community members believed the police could have subdued or disarmed him without the use of live ammunition.
Speaking to journalists at the LNP Headquarters in Monrovia, the victim’s mother, Lisa Y. Boyz, said she was denied access to her son’s body from the day of his death on October 8, 2025, until Thursday, November 14. According to her, when she finally saw the remains, the body bore “multiple bullet wounds.”
Madam Boyz expressed dismay that, since the incident, no senior police official has visited the family to sympathize with them. She further alleged that a scheduled meeting with Police Inspector General, Gregory Coleman was abruptly canceled on the grounds that he was traveling for an international engagement—something she described as “a sign of disregard and insensitivity.”
She also accused the police of refusing to provide the family with an investigation report or any update regarding the circumstances that led to her son’s killing. Madam Boyz insisted that her son was mentally ill and should not have been treated as a criminal, stressing that he was “not an armed robber, not a drug dealer, and did not deserve to die in such a manner.”
Calling for international intervention, she appealed to the U.S. Embassy, the European Union, and ECOWAS to ensure that justice is served. The grieving mother further claimed that Inspector General Coleman has shown preferential treatment to other families, referencing the recent case of an officer who died in an accident in Vai Town. She noted that the family of the deceased officer was promptly received by authorities and even granted an audience with the President.
During her sit-in protest, Madam Boyz lamented that her son’s body has been left at the JFK Medical Center mortuary for more than a month without clear communication from the police. She is demanding the immediate release of the investigation report and her son’s body so that, according to her, “he can be buried with dignity and honor.
