Liberian journalist and Founder of Rescue Youth Alliance (REYA), Sylvester Choloplay, emphasized the importance of peace for Liberia’s development during the Run4Peace/Walk program held in Monrovia in observance of Liberia’s 21 years of peace.

Organized by the African Youth Fellowship (AYF) Liberia, in partnership with Rescue Youth Alliance -YEYA, the event drew over 500 young Liberians who ran from the Ministerial Complex to Invincible Sports Park for an official program, demonstrating their commitment to peace.

The program was held on Saturday – September 21, 2024 in observance of the International Day of Peace, a global event established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 to promote peace and encourage nations to resolve conflicts without violence.

Mr. Choloplay reflected on Liberia’s 14 years of civil unrest, stating, “The scars of conflict remind us of the importance of peace. Our 21 years of peace are pieces of evidence to our resilience and determination to build a better future.”

The Liberian youth advocate urged young people to reject political manipulation. “True empowerment comes from constructive engagement. Embrace peace and be the change-makers Liberia needs,” he said.

The Spoon Communications Network Executive Mansion Reporter said peace is necessary as a catalyst for economic growth and not merely the absence of conflict, but the foundation upon which the future can be built, as peaceful environments attract investors and promote sustainable development.

Also speaking at the occasion, Moses Buwee, Executive Director of African Youth Fellowship Liberia, lauded the impressive turnout, saying that peace is essential for the nation’s welfare, and remains crucial for sustainable development. Mr. Buwee said over 500 Liberian youth participated in the program.

In an interview with journalists at the program, Accountability Lab Liberia Country Director, Lawrence Yealue, encouraged attendees to focus on productive endeavors such as entrepreneurship and leadership.

“Our youth have the potential to be powerful agents of change,” he said.

The Run4Peace/Walk concluded with awards for top participants, celebrating the spirit of Liberia’s youth. Festus M. Boaywe was the first male winner, Korpo Sheriff was the first female winner, and Gladys D. McGill secured second place.

The event accentuated the essential role of youth in shaping a prosperous future, with support from organizations like the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, Ultimate Fitness, and Bong TV, emphasizing that peace is critical for Liberia’s economic growth and stability.
