The Liberia Football Association (LFA) on Tuesday officially commenced its 2026 MA Elite Referees Course, bringing together 30 of the country’s top match officials at the association’s headquarters in Congo Town.

The training program has assembled 26 male and four female elite referees, all of whom are expected to undergo intensive technical and physical training aimed at enhancing their officiating abilities and preparing them for higher levels of competition.

The course forms part of the LFA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen refereeing standards in Liberia and ensure that local match officials remain equipped with the knowledge and skills required to meet modern football demands.

According to the LFA, the primary objective of the course is to improve the knowledge, fitness, consistency, decision-making, and overall performance of elite referees within the Member Association. The initiative is also intended to align Liberian referees with international officiating standards and better prepare them for both domestic and international assignments.

The program began with a comprehensive fitness assessment designed to evaluate the physical readiness of participants, a key requirement for referees expected to officiate at the highest levels of the game. Leading the course is FIFA Technical Instructor Al Mohammed Ahmed of Somalia, who is providing expert guidance on the Laws of the Game, match management, positioning, disciplinary control, and other critical aspects of modern refereeing. He is being assisted by local instructors who are supporting the delivery of the training sessions.

The course is expected to provide participants with valuable insights into the latest developments in football officiating while helping them improve their performance on the field.

As football in Liberia continues to grow, initiatives such as the MA Elite Referees Course remain vital in ensuring that match officials possess the competence, confidence, and professionalism needed to effectively manage competitive matches and uphold the integrity of the game. The LFA continues to prioritize referee development as a key component of its broader strategy to improve football standards across the country.
