President Joseph N. Boakai has reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following high-level talks with Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner at the Executive Mansion.

The meeting, held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, focused on expanding economic cooperation, boosting trade and infrastructure development, and advancing broader African integration and development goals.

Minister Wagner led a delegation that included the DRC Ambassador to Liberia, Marie-Hélène Okitundu Ayaki Omba; Director for African Zone and the Middle East at the DRC Foreign Ministry, Christian Ndinda Diluanzodila; and Political Counselor Valentin Albert Makongo.

During the discussions, the delegation briefed President Boakai on ongoing initiatives involving natural resources management, trade cooperation, infrastructure development, and prospects for enhancing regional connectivity, including exploring opportunities for direct flights to the United States.

Welcoming the delegation, President Boakai emphasized the importance of sustained engagement among African nations, noting that stronger direct interactions between leaders and governments can foster mutual understanding and accelerate the continent’s development agenda.

The Liberian leader also provided guidance on deepening cooperation in key sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and multilateral diplomacy. He highlighted Liberia’s forthcoming tenure on the United Nations Security Council as an opportunity to champion African interests and promote shared development priorities on the global stage.

Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti described the visit as a significant step toward strengthening the longstanding relationship between Liberia and the DRC.

“The visit of the DRC Foreign Minister will go a long way in further cementing the existing cordial ties between Liberia and the Democratic Republic of Congo,” Nyanti said. Speaking to reporters after meeting President Boakai, Minister Wagner characterized the discussions as productive and forward-looking.

“We’ve just come out of a very fruitful meeting with His Excellency,” Wagner said. “The instructions and guidance that he gave us were very motivating, especially in pushing us to look further in our partnership on bilateral issues.”

She added that the meeting had reinforced both countries’ commitment to pursuing identified areas of cooperation and praised the leadership of Presidents Joseph Boakai and Félix Tshisekedi for advancing stronger partnerships between their nations.

Wagner said the discussions provided renewed momentum for collaboration across several sectors, expressing confidence that Liberia and the DRC would continue to build on their growing relationship for the benefit of both countries and the African continent.
