The Government of Liberia has announced a major economic relief plan for thousands of Liberian market women, proposing interest-free loans and the rehabilitation of major markets across the country in a move aimed at reducing financial hardship and improving trading conditions.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung during the induction ceremony of newly elected officials of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) in Monrovia, where he delivered President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s message of support to petty traders and small business women.

According to Vice President Koung, the government’s proposed loan scheme is designed to free market women from dependence on exploitative high-interest informal lenders that continue to trap many traders in cycles of debt. He stressed that beneficiaries must ensure timely repayment, so the initiative remains sustainable and allows more women to benefit over time.

Beyond financial support, the government also plans to undertake major renovations and modernization works at some of Liberia’s busiest commercial centers, including Waterside, Redemption, Rally Town, Gardnerville, and Omega Markets.

The Vice President said the planned upgrades will focus on improving sanitation, safety, and the overall business environment for traders, while discussions are ongoing with development partners to support the full transformation of the Omega Market.

He also acknowledged the longstanding problem of inadequate storage facilities, especially for perishable goods, describing it as a key issue the government intends to address to reduce post-harvest losses and improve profitability for traders.

Calling for unity within the Liberia Marketing Association, Koung urged the new leadership to strengthen cooperation and governance within the institution, emphasizing that organized leadership is critical to achieving lasting reforms.

Reflecting on his own past as a member of the LMA, Vice President Koung said the government remains deeply committed to improving the welfare of market women, whom he described as the backbone of Liberia’s local economy.

Officials inducted into office include Madam Lusu Sloan-Crawford as President, Olady Sneh as Vice President, Patrick N. Sarti as Secretary General, Patrick K. Jolo as Assistant Secretary General, and Ida T. Duah as Chaplain.

Also speaking at the event, Local Government Minister Francis Nyumalin congratulated the new leadership and called for reconciliation and inclusive engagement with all stakeholders, including candidates who contested the recent elections for the good of the Association and the country.
