The Government of Liberia and the United Nations commemorated eight decades of partnership and progress during a colorful ceremony held in Kakata, Margibi County on Friday, October 24, 2025. The event, which brought together government officials, UN representatives, civil society actors and students, highlighted Liberia’s enduring role as a founding member of the United Nations and its continued collaboration with the global body in promoting peace, development, and human rights.

Speaking at the ceremony under the theme “80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights,” President Joseph N. Boakai said Liberia has always been guided by the ideals of the United Nations, peace, security, and human rights and remains an active participant in global cooperation efforts.

“It is a moment of pride for our country today as we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations. As a founding member of this truly global organization, we recall that our decision in 1945 to sign the Charter in San Francisco was made with a deep sense of duty to humanity and to our common world. We therefore celebrate with joy the UN’s global accomplishments as we reflect on Liberia’s proud history as a founding member of this respected organization,” Boakai noted.

According to him, the United Nations stands as a beacon of hope and cooperation for all peoples and nations, working tirelessly to uphold the values of peace, security, development, and human rights.

“We reaffirm Liberia’s continued support for the UN’s mission and underscore our belief and leadership in advancing global peace and solidarity,” President Boakai said.

Looking ahead to Liberia’s term on the United Nations Security Council in 2026, the Liberian leader recognized the importance of collective action in addressing the world’s pressing challenges, from sustainable development and climate change to humanitarian crises and conflict resolution.

Moreover, he narrated that Liberia remains steadfast in its support for multilateralism and continues to contribute to the efforts of the UN in achieving these goals. For her part, Foreign Minister, Sara Beysolow Nyanti described the partnership between Liberia and the UN as “a model of resilience, mutual respect, and shared progress.”

According to her, Liberia has benefited greatly from UN support in areas such as peacebuilding, governance reform, education, and healthcare. UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Christine Umutoni noted that the UN is more than an institution; “It is a living promise, spanning borders, bridging continents, inspiring generations.”

Madam Umutoni explained that the United Nations has for eighty years, worked to forge peace, tackle poverty and hunger, advance human rights, and build a more sustainable world, together. “As we look ahead, we confront challenges of staggering scale: escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technologies, and threats to the very fabric of our institution,” she added.

The head of the UN in Liberia stated that there is no time for timidity or retreat; adding, “Now, more than ever, the world must recommit to solving problems no nation can solve alone.” “On this UN Day, let’s stand together and fulfill the extraordinary promise of your United Nations. Let’s show the world what is possible when “we the peoples” choose to act as one,” Madam Umutoni said.
