The University of Liberia Faculty and Staff Association (ULFASA) has ordered an indefinite shutdown of all academic and administrative activities at the state’s premier university, directing faculty and staff to remain off campuses until the demands contained in a resolution adopted by its General Assembly are fully met.
In a press statement issued Monday, July 20, 2026, ULFASA said its General Assembly’s resolution remains “active and in full fulfillment of the wishes of both Faculty and Staff,” warning members against returning to work until the association’s conditions are satisfied.
“As a result of this decision, all Faculty and Staff are reminded to remain disengaged from all Academic and Staff Activities until the wishes of the General Assembly are fully fulfilled. Therefore all offices and academic units must remain closed,” the statement declared.
The association also cautioned supervisors and directors against attempting to compel employees to resume work, urging members to immediately report any such efforts to the leadership for what it described as “prompt action” against those involved.
ULFASA disclosed that its position has been formally communicated to the University Of Liberia Board Of Trustees and to the Government of Liberia’s designated mediator, Justice Minister Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, who is expected to facilitate discussions aimed at resolving the dispute.
The faculty body further urged members to rely solely on official communications from the association regarding developments and the next course of action. Also, the latest directive deepens uncertainty over the reopening of the University of Liberia, with students now facing further disruptions to academic activities as negotiations between the faculty, university authorities, and the government continue.
Moreover, the statement was jointly signed by Eric T. S. Patten, Secretary General of the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA), and E. Martin Weah II, Secretary General of the University of Liberia Staff Association (ULSA).
