In observance of this year’s World Humanitarian Day, the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) is calling for increased global attention and action to address the growing humanitarian needs within Liberia. This year’s theme, “Act for Humanity,” resonates deeply with the mission and values of the Red Cross.
In a press statement, the Secretary General of the Liberian Red Cross, Gregory T. Blamoh, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated efforts to alleviate the suffering of thousands recently affected by unprecedented flooding in Monrovia and other counties. Mr. Blamoh stated, “The needs on the ground are devastating and require urgent attention. It is time to act quickly to bring relief to those affected by the recent flood.”
To address these pressing needs, the Liberia National Red Cross Society, with support from its international partners, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the European Union in Liberia, will provide cash assistance to over 1,500 families, totaling a population of 13,100 people in Montserrado, Grand Cape, and Bong Counties.
Mr. Blamoh stressed that while this support is crucial, many more people are still in need. He called on the public to use World Humanitarian Day as an opportunity to provide assistance to those in need. “This is a moment for us all to come together and ‘Act for Humanity.'”
In line with this year’s theme, the LNRCS will further support communities by targeting over 600 people, including orphans, people with disabilities, and female inmates at various prison centers in Montserrado, Bong, Margibi, and Grand Bassa Counties. The support will include essential items such as food, hygiene products, and other non-food items to alleviate the immediate needs of these vulnerable groups.
World Humanitarian Day on August 19 serves to honor humanitarian workers and advocate for humanitarian causes, particularly in regions facing significant challenges. Liberia, like many countries, has vulnerable populations that often lack access to essential resources and support. The LNRCS is committed to seeking and alleviating human suffering wherever it may be found, demonstrating its commitment to humanitarian principles and community suppor
