Barely one month to the ensuing Nimba County Senatorial By-Election, five aspirants have so far registered for the process; the National Elections Commission (NEC) has disclosed. It can be recalled that the Board of Commissioners of NEC on February 10, 2025 issued an election writ to Magistrates of Nimba County for the conduct of a senatorial by-election.
The writ was issued to the Nimba County Upper and Lower NEC Magistrates by then NEC Acting Chairperson Teplah Reeves. According to Cllr. Reeves, the issuance of the writ provides the mandate for the two magistrates to conduct the Nimba County Senatorial By-Election in line with NEC’s guidelines.
The By-Election in Nimba County is to fill the vacancy created at the Liberian Senate following the death of Nimba County Senator, Prince Yormie Johnson, alias PYJ. With the issuance of the writ, the Nimba County Senatorial By-election is now scheduled for April 22, 2025.
Speaking at a news conference held at the Commission on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Commissioner Barsee Leo Kpangbai, Chairperson of the Nimba County By-election Committee, disclosed that two independent candidates and three aspirants from political parties have so far registered for the ensuing process.
Though Cllr. Kpangbai declined to answer to journalists’ inquiries on grounds that the media engagement was not meant for questions and answers, sources at the Commission hinted this paper that ill-mannered social media talk show host Nayapougma Oldpa Yeazeahn, alias “Prophet Key,” is among the aspirants that secured nomination form for registration.
Nimba County is the second highest voting population with 307,256 inhabitants. Commissioner Kpangbai disclosed that massive preparations are underway for the much-publicized election as budget for the process is at the verge of approval by the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).
“We will reach all nine electoral districts. But in all that we do at the Commission, we need good working relationship with the media,” Commissioner Kpangbai added.
