Following weeks of delays, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Liberia has disclosed that the institution has recorded a 79% pass rate in one of its major categories with 33,000 out of 40,938 candidates meeting the required standards.
Speaking Thursday August 20,2026, at the Ministry of information regular press briefing, Dale G. Gbotoe disclosed that a total of 40,938 candidates sat the 2026 examinations in the key category, with 33,000 candidates declared successful.
He described the 79% pass rate as an indication of steady progress, but noted that performance varied across subjects and categories. According to him, for the English Language and Mathematics 20,741 candidates successfully passed both subjects in one of the assessed categories, while the mathematics, 3,900 candidates obtained a pass adding that combined requirements 2,268 candidates obtained the required grades in Mathematics and other core subjects.
For the Credit Passes according to Gbotoe, 1,694 candidates obtained credits in at least the required number of subjects while category recorded 3,045 candidates who met the benchmarks. The WAEC boss said the data reflects both improvement and areas needing attention, particularly in science and technical subjects.
He urged schools, teachers, and students to sustain their efforts toward improving learning outcomes across all subject areas. Gbotoe noted that the results should serve as motivation for schools to invest more in teaching and learning, and for students to take their studies seriously.
He commended schools, teachers, candidates, parents, and other stakeholders for their cooperation during the 2026 examination process noting that smooth administration was key to the release of timely results. WAEC Liberia said detailed school-by-school performance reports will be made available to principals and education authorities in the coming days.
