Buchanan Central Prison, originally designed to house just 47 inmates, is currently struggling with an alarming overcrowding situation, housing over 145 prisoners in its cramped facilities.
The extreme congestion has led to unbearable conditions, with intense heat and a severe, foul odor filling the prison compound. The smell of sweat and poor hygiene making it nearly impossible for the prisoners and staff to escape the discomfort.
In addition to overcrowding, the facility is facing a severe water shortage. The prison’s only hand pump is running dry, leaving inmates without access to clean water. This lack of basic sanitation further compounds the already dire situation, making daily life unbearable for those inside.
Moreover, the prison’s lack of adequate transportation presents a major risk, particularly when it comes to sick inmates. With no functioning vehicle or motorcycle, there is no reliable way to transport prisoners to a hospital during the night, raising concerns over the safety and well-being of those requiring urgent medical care. Authorities are under mounting pressure to address these critical issues, as the conditions inside the prison continue to worsen.
