In a major step toward addressing mental health challenges in Liberia’s higher education sector, the African Methodist Episcopal University (AMEU) has announced the launch of a comprehensive campus-wide Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Program aimed at providing counseling, trauma support, and emotional wellness services for students, faculty, and staff.

The initiative, which officially begins on August 1, 2026, follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between AMEU and Haven of Hope Counseling and Therapeutic Services, establishing a partnership focused on strengthening mental health care and building a healthier academic environment. University President Rev. Alvin E. Attah described the partnership as a landmark intervention that places the well-being of the university community at the center of the institution’s mission.

“The mental health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remain a priority for AME University. This partnership reflects our commitment to creating an environment where every member of our community has access to the support needed to thrive academically, professionally, and personally,” Rev. Attah said.

According to the University, the new program will deliver structured mental health and psychosocial support services, emphasizing prevention, preparedness, early intervention, peer counseling, capacity building, and improved access to professional counseling.

As part of the rollout, students and staff will receive specialized training through peer support groups, trauma-informed faculty development programs, and capacity-building sessions for non-academic personnel. A campus-wide awareness campaign will also be launched to promote understanding of mental health issues and encourage a culture of empathy, resilience, and support.

AMEU said the partnership with Haven of Hope Counseling and Therapeutic Services is expected to equip members of the university community with practical skills to manage stress, cope with trauma, assist peers in distress, and improve their overall academic and personal well-being.

The University noted that the initiative reflects its broader commitment to holistic education, recognizing that mental wellness is essential to academic achievement, leadership development, and community service.

With the introduction of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Program, AMEU joins a growing number of institutions placing mental health at the forefront of student success and institutional development, signaling a renewed commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and resilient learning environment.
