Members of a student-based political party at the University of Liberia were teargassed during a protest on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, as they demanded improvements to the learning facilities at the state-run university.
The Progressive Student Alliance of the University of Liberia (PROSA), led by Chairman William B. Sando, expressed frustration over the administration’s failure to meet the students’ demands for enhanced learning
The students call for better internet connectivity access, adequate transportation (including buses), and improved facilities. They criticized the administration for removing the “add new button” from the e-portal, which has hindered many students from registering for the semester.
The protesters are dissatisfied with the administration’s response to their grievances and are calling for immediate action to address these issues. They emphasize their commitment to non-violence and their determination to advocate for their rights until their demands are
They also lamented the lack of support from the government, despite President Joseph N. Boakai and Finance Minister Hon. Augustine K. Ngafuan being alumni of the university. Chairman Sando stated, “We will continue to defend the interests of the student body and demand action from the university and state authorities.”
The students are seeking accountability from the administration regarding any fraud in the system and are urging for the restoration of the registration button to facilitate students’ enrollment. They stressed the need for a conducive learning environment and protection for students as part of their quest for better education.
The student leader also expressed disappointment in the newly appointed President of the University for her lack of action regarding the administration’s failure to improve infrastructure and resources at the university.
Sando called for student mobilization and support to fight for their right to a quality education, encouraging students not to be intimidated by the administration or the police.
