The body of a 16-year-old boy has been retrieved in Grand Bassa County after he reportedly drowned in an open well in Gbar Town, Neekreen Statutory District on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Reports have it that Timothy Gargar Gueh was attempting to fetch water from the well when he fell in and subsequently drowned, but was said to be living with epilepsy for the past six years, though it is unclear whether his condition played a role in the incident.
Following the discovery of his body, the Crime Service Division of the Grand Bassa County Police Department launched an investigation into the matter, and concluded that there was no sign of foul play and that the incident appears to be accidental.
The deceased has since been laid to rest while family members continue to mourn the loss of the young boy. Local residents have expressed their condolences to the family.
This tragic event highlights the ongoing concerns regarding unprotected wells in many rural areas of Liberia, which remain a common source of water but also pose significant safety risks, especially to children.
Local officials have urged residents to take extra precautions and consider securing or covering opened wells to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
