While in Beijing, China, Liberia’s First Lady Kartumu Y. Boakai joined her fellow African First Ladies at the Women’s Empowerment through Education Meeting held by the First Lady of China, Dr. Peng Liyuan, on the margins of the Forum on China- Africa-Cooperation on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
According to an Executive Mansion release dated September 7, 2024, during the conference, the First Lady of China, Peng Liyuan, emphasized the importance of women’s education and the shared goals of China and Africa in advancing women’s education to create a brighter future.
She highlighted the exceptional contributions made by Chinese and African women through their hard work, wisdom, and dedication. The event featured speeches from various participants, including the wife of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Marie Khone Faye, who expressed gratitude to Dr. Peng for her outstanding contributions to promoting the education of African girls and women.
The long-standing support and assistance from China in related fields were also acknowledged and appreciated. Amid the conference, the attendees were treated to children’s singing, Peking Opera, and a tour of exhibits showcasing China’s traditional culture and achievements in women’s education.
The First Ladies expressed their commitment to education and shared values, aiming to ensure women empowerment in their respective countries. Reflecting on the conference, Mrs. Boakai expressed her appreciation for the invite and said that she looks to elevating the voices of Liberian women and girls for economic empowerment and opportunities.
