President Joseph N. Boakai has reassured Liberians that tensions along the country’s northern border in Lofa County remain firmly under control, emphasizing that calm and stability have prevailed despite recent concerns.
Speaking at his third Cabinet meeting held at the Executive Mansion Tea House on Thursday, March 26, 2026, the President acknowledged public unease over developments along the Liberia–Guinea border but maintained that the situation “remains peaceful,” crediting swift diplomatic intervention and the composure of residents.
He disclosed that government authorities, in coordination with security agencies and community leaders, acted proactively to defuse tensions and prevent escalation, adding that residents directly affected by the situation demonstrated notable restraint, even in the face of provocation.
“At a very difficult time when people’s lives are disrupted, and emotions are high, the maturity of the residents, supported by our security apparatus and government officials, helped to reduce tensions and maintain calmness,” President Boakai stated. Reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to peace, the President cautioned against any relapse into conflict, stressing the country’s painful past and the need to preserve stability.
“Liberia has learned from its past. There is nothing we gain from conflict, especially at a time when the world itself appears to be on fire,” he warned. President Boakai also commended government officials and key stakeholders who worked behind the scenes to de-escalate the situation through quiet diplomacy and sustained community engagement.
Addressing broader global challenges, he pointed to ongoing international crises and their economic ripple effects, including rising costs of goods and services in Liberia. The Liberian leader, however, urged citizens to focus on strengthening domestic productivity as a safeguard against external shocks.
The situation at the Lofa border has attracted significant national attention in recent days, but the government’s latest update suggests a cautious return to stability, with authorities continuing to closely monitor developments.
