Liberia’s Public Works Minister, Roland Layfette Giddings, has announced that the Southeastern road corridor will be fully paved by 2029.  During a press on March 19, 2026, at the Ministry of Information, Minister Giddings shared that plans are in progress to pave the corridor, which will connect Ganta to Fishtown and further extend to Harper.

He mentioned that multiple contractors will be deployed along different segments of the corridor, with funding secured through partnerships with the World Bank and other development partners. According to him, sections such as Tapita to Zwedru and Zwedru to Fishtown are either underway or in advanced procurement stages. The entire corridor is expected to be completed by 2029, which will significantly reduce travel time and enhance regional trade.

Additionally, Minister Giddings highlighted plans to construct strategic bridges aimed at strengthening cross-border trade with neighboring countries. He noted that improved infrastructure will enhance connectivity to key ports, particularly the Port of Harper, which has the potential to support increased regional commerce.

The government has adopted a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to expedite road development. Under this initiative, a 255-kilometer road project stretching from the Freeport area through several counties to Lofa is set to commence, with groundbreaking scheduled to take place soon. Minister Giddings described the PPP approach as a “bold step” that will attract private sector investment and accelerate infrastructure delivery. He emphasized that all projects are aligned with national development priorities and designed to withstand climate challenges, especially unpredictable rainfall patterns.
