The Government of Liberia has officially broken grounds for a transformative US$19.4 million Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, marking a significant milestone in advancing industrial agriculture and creating new employment opportunities.

Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung represented President Joseph Nyuma Boakai during the ceremony held on Friday, May 23, 2025, and formally handed over the official deed for the 200-hectare site to the Liberia Special Economic Zone Authority (LSEZA).

The SAPZ project is a key component of President Joseph Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, aimed at revitalizing Liberia’s agriculture sector and stimulating rural economic growth.

The Liberia Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone aims to move the country’s agricultural sector toward industrialization while creating sustainable jobs for local communities. When completed, the project will attract investors to build factories and processing facilities that will add value to locally grown crops.

Vice President Koung expressed optimism, stating, “This marks a new chapter for Liberian farmers.” According to him, the establishment of this zone will unlock the full potential of the agriculture sector by providing the necessary facilities and opportunities to process and export Liberian produce at a large scale.

Also speaking, Grand Bassa County lawmakers, including Representatives Thomas Alexander Goshua, Matthew Fairplay Joe, Clarence Banks and Alfred Flomo, praised President Boakai’s commitment to rural development.

For his part, Grand Bassa County Acting Superintendent James Duen said the project would provide lasting opportunities for residents who have long struggled with limited employment options.
