The Ministry of Agriculture has announced the conclusion of a three-day assessment mission with the Mainland Group of Companies from China. The Group is preparing a US$100 million investment in Liberia’s agricultural sector. Speaking Thursday October 2,2025, at the Ministry of information regular press briefing, Daniel O. Sando, Deputy Minister for Press & Public Affairs, said the group already operates several agro-industrial facilities across Africa, including five factories in Côte d’Ivoire with an annual rubber production of 450,000 tons as well as operations in Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, and Zambia.
He said the company’s entry into Liberia will bring valuable expertise to drive agro-industrialization, create jobs, expand markets, and strengthen national food security. “Land has already been secured in 12 districts in Bong County for a rice processing factory, and several hectares have been allocated in Margibi County for a cassava starch processing plant”, he added .
Sando added that the project will also include the development of a sugar refinery supported by sugarcane plantations, construction of warehouses and logistics hubs near ports, and expansion of shipping facilities. He said these projects are expected to raise farmers’ incomes by 20-30%, directly benefit more than 150,000 families within five years, create thousands of jobs, and significantly reduce reliance on imports.
In another development, Sando disclosed that the Ministry of Health recently hosted a three-day West Africa Health Organization (WAHO) Regional Conference in Monrovia. Sando said the conference brings together ECOWAS member states to review collaboration on emergency response, evaluate ongoing health initiatives, and address barriers such as funding, infrastructure, and communication. “Participating countries include Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Senegal, and others. The conference aims to develop practical strategies to enhance collective health security across the ECOWAS region,” he told reporters.
