During a media breakfast held in Monrovia on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, commemorating 80 years of partnership between Liberia and the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Madam Christine N. Umutoni, reaffirmed the longstanding partnership with a new cooperation framework.
The framework is aimed at driving human capacity development, good governance, the rule of law, and sustainable economic growth. Madam Umutoni underscored the significance of the new framework in deepening collaboration between the global body and Liberia.
“The new cooperation framework reflects our shared vision for a prosperous, peaceful, and inclusive Liberia. It prioritizes investment in people, stronger institutions, and sustainable growth that leaves no one behind,” she added. According to her, the framework, which will guide UN operations in Liberia over the next five years, seeks to align with the government’s development agenda, focusing on key areas including human capital enhancement, governance and the rule of law, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability.
Umutoni noted that Liberia’s contributions to the United Nations have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s peacebuilding and development goals. She commended Liberia’s leadership in peacekeeping and its commitment to democratic consolidation and regional stability.
“As we celebrate 80 years of partnership, we also look to the future, one Liberia, one UN, one shared destiny,” she added. Madam Umutoni recognized Liberia as one of the founding members of the United Nations, explaining that Liberia has played a pivotal role in advancing the UN’s global mission. Speaking on behalf of the Government of Liberia, Acting Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Information, Lawrence M. Fahnbulleh, said that the government, through President Joseph N. Boakai, emphasized the importance of the UN’s support in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and other development objectives.
According to him, the government commends the UN for its contributions to peacebuilding, sustainable development, and other sectors. Also speaking, Comfort Lamptey, UN Women Country Representative, highlighted Liberia as a priority country for UN Women, emphasizing the importance of investing in women. Moreover, she narrated that the normative pillar of UN Women’s work involves translating international norms into national polices and supporting Liberia’s reporting on international commitments.
