The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of University of Liberia President Dr. Layli Maparyan, citing corruption, neglect, and deception.  ‎In a statement issued over the weekend, SUP Chairman Sylvester Wheeler accused Dr. Maparyan of failing to address the issues raised by the students, adding that academic scheduling and neglecting staff welfare are significant issues.

‎The statement highlighted six key areas of concern: Infrastructure Failures (Dilapidated classrooms, offices, and bathrooms, with no internet connectivity); mismanagement of academic scheduling (Designating vacation school as the “second semester,” which limits course offerings); failure to Address Add/Drop Issues- a chaotic process that leaves students anxious about grades and graduation; illegal dismissal of staff without transparent justification; failure in fundraising efforts depleting university resources while failing to secure external funding, and Salary disparity and corruption- prioritizing corrupt allies over faculty and staff, resulting in huge retroactive salary payments.

‎The campus-based group demands Dr. Maparyan’s immediate resignation to save the university from further ruin.

‎This comes shortly after the University of Liberia Faculty Association decided to disengage from academic activities due to unpaid wages. The question is, will the University of Liberia open as per its statement issued that school could open on September 1? The University of Liberia is the country’s state-run higher institution of learning that is supported by the government of Liberia, but over the years, the University of Liberia has faced challenges, leaving students hopeful of the opening of this year.
