The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) has condemned, in the strongest possible terms, threats issued by Liberia’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Koon, against journalists assigned at the Capitol Building in Monrovia. In a statement, ALJA President Joey Kennedy described Speaker Koon’s comments—specifically the threat to incarcerate accredited journalists performing their constitutional and professional duties—as hostile, alarming, and deeply troubling for any democratic society.
Mr. Kennedy noted that such remarks create a chilling effect on press freedom and undermine the essential role of the media in promoting transparency and accountability in governance. ALJA emphasized that the Speaker’s threats are unacceptable, reckless, and incompatible with the standards of democratic leadership. Elected officials, the association stressed, have a solemn responsibility to uphold and protect press freedom—not to intimidate or silence journalists reporting on the activities of government on behalf of the Liberian people.
“The media is not an enemy of the state; it is an essential partner in democracy,” President Kennedy stated. “Any attempt, verbal or otherwise, to threaten journalists is an affront to the rule of law and to the democratic values Liberia continues to cultivate.” ALJA has called on Speaker Koon to retract his remarks and issue an unequivocal public apology to the journalists targeted, as well as to the wider Liberian media community. The association also urges the leadership of the House of Representatives to reaffirm its commitment to fostering a free, safe, and independent press within the Legislature.
Additionally, ALJA calls on the Government of Liberia, civil society organizations, and international partners to closely monitor the situation to ensure that no retaliatory actions are taken against journalists as a result of the Speaker’s comments. The association reaffirms its unwavering support for all journalists working under often challenging circumstances in Liberia. ALJA remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for press freedom, safeguard media rights, and promote responsible, ethical journalism. The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing press freedom, supporting professional development, and promoting good governance and transparency in Liberia.
