Six Hundred New Homes To Yield Huge Economic Impact…Housing Authority Boss Discloses

The National Housing Authority of Liberia has disclosed that a proposed construction of 600 housing units will make huge economic impact on the country. Speaking on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at a Ministry of Information press briefing, Florence K. Geebae, Managing Director of the National Housing Authority (NHA), said the units will be designed, built, and sold to public servants, and are expected to improve the housing condition of 2,640 people, given Liberia’s average household size of 4.4 people.

Furthermore, the housing units will provide at least 3,000 indirect jobs created at the rate of 5 jobs per housing unit (Land sellers, transport workers, building materials suppliers, food sellers, etc. will benefit.

“We are going to improve access to basic infrastructure and basic services,” she said, adding that they have identified and are also preparing land for the construction of the units in six pilot counties, including Bomi, Bong, Lofa, Nimba, Bassa, and Montserrado.

According to her, the bill of quantities, including designs and technical specifications were concluded and submitted to LARIX and MOS, awaiting the implementation phase.  However, Managing Director Geebae revealed that Liberia’s housing sector faces a severe affordability crisis, with high construction costs, limited finances, and poverty making decent housing unattainable for most citizens.

She said urban areas like Monrovia are experiencing overcrowding and huge slum situations. “No mortgage banks, financing and refinancing institutions; we now have a partnership with Republic Bank and LBDI for mortgage packages/program”, she said.
