Senator Momoh Cyrus of Lofa County and Chair on Defense, Security, and Intelligence at the Liberian Senate demands justice and immediate arrest of those connected to the suspicious death of a 19-year-old inmate, Yarkpawolo Moisema.

Moisema died on January 6, 2025, while in Police custody at the Voinjama Police Depot in Voinjama City, Lofa County. The Lofa County lawmaker appreciated the Ministry of Justice for conducting an independent and transparent autopsy, which attributes the death of the deceased to unnatural cause, prompting further investigation to bring the alleged doer to book.

Senator Cyrus was excited for the collective progress made thus far in ensuring Justice for the late Moisema and all others who died under such mysterious circumstances.

“We demanded this. We insisted upon understanding in clear terms the circumstances surrounding Mosemai’s death. We re-echoed the stance of the family and concerned citizens for a comprehensive autopsy in no small way. We are glad the autopsy was conducted and report is out, which points to unnatural death. Next, impartial and speedy investigation must follow to dispense justice and hold perpetrators accountable in accordance with our laws,” the Senator said.

On Monday, the Ministry of Justice informed the public that an autopsy was requested in the suspicious death of 19–year-old Moisema. The Ministry pointed out that as a result, an autopsy was conducted on March 22, 2025 by the state pathologist, Dr. Benedict Kolee, in the presence of family members of the late Moisema and members of various Law enforcement agencies at the Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital, Voinjama, Lofa County.

“The autopsy report has established that the cause of death is unnatural. Given the above, the Ministry of Justice has launched an immediate investigation based on the findings of the autopsy report and will keep the public updated as the investigation progresses,” the statement quoted.

Meanwhile, Senator Cyrus vowed that under his watch, there will be no business as usual, without “let’s leave our own to God” and “let’s just forget about it because we’re poor,” as it’s usually done.

“Justice is for and must serve everyone, not some. Justice must serve blindly, regardless of who is involved. I want to thank the Liberia National Police – LNP, the Ministry of Justice – Liberia, the Government of Liberia, local authorities of Lofa and citizens in general for their cooperation and support thus far,” Senator Cyrus narrated.
