The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has continued its outreach to improve rural internet connectivity in Liberia, with the town of Managorguah in Grand Cape Mount County, being the latest community to benefit from ongoing efforts to restore telecommunication services across the country.
According to the LTA, residents in these remote areas have long been without reliable access to mobile networks, internet, or even basic communication services. However, this is changing- thanks to the initiative.
As part of the outreach effort, fifty mobile phones were distributed to residents, allowing them to reconnect with loved ones, access emergency services, and seize new digital opportunities.
On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, a day before this distribution, the LTA began installing Starlink satellite internet stations in various rural communities, starting with the Suehn Mecca District in Bomi County.
During the unveiling of the Starlink equipment in Suehn Mecca District, LTA Acting Commissioner Patrick Honnah announced that residents would receive one month of complimentary internet connectivity once the installation is completed. After this period, they will transition to a monthly subscription. Honnah emphasized the importance of maintaining the equipment to ensure residents fully benefit from the service.
This initiative is part of the Universal Access Program, which aims to reactivate dormant telecommunications infrastructure and collaborate with mobile network providers to restore signals in remote areas through the installation of Starlink.
Honnah stated that the project’s goal is to bridge the digital divide in Liberia, with plans to extend beyond Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties to other rural regions nationwide. The project is expected to reach even more hard-to-access areas across the country.
Residents of Suehn Mecca expressed their gratitude to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his leadership in making this initiative possible, sharing their excitement about gaining access to internet services. They also committed to taking proper care of the equipment.
Meanwhile, the LTA plans to continue expanding its efforts into hard-to-reach communities to ensure that no Liberian is left behind in the digital space.
