The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Julius Kanubah, has assured journalists and the public that the Union will remain strong in defending press freedom and free speech in Liberia, irrespective of the distraction and distortion tactics applied by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration to keep the Union off track.
Speaking on Monday, May 4, 2026, during activities marking World Press Freedom Day in Kakata, Margibi County, Mr. Kanubah said PUL will not be shaken in its efforts to protect the rights of journalists and promote freedom in the interest of the public.
He reminded the audience that for more than 179 years, Liberia has recognized that press freedom is key to protecting all other freedoms. He also referenced a recent statement by António Guterres, who emphasized that all freedoms depend on press freedom. According to him, without a free press, there can be no human rights, no sustainable development, and no peace.
Mr. Kanubah recalled the PUL’s April 22, 2026, statement, which raised concerns about what the Union described as the gradual weakening of democratic values in Liberia, especially freedom of speech and expression under the government of President Joseph Boakai. He stressed that the Union clearly stated that there can be no national progress without freedom.
The PUL President said the Union’s position did not sit well with the Ministry of Information, noting that the reaction from officials, including Minister Jerolinmek Piah and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Daniel Sando, led to accusations against the Union.
He described the claims that the PUL had been “katorized” as strange, adding that whatever the term means is best left to those making the accusation.
Mr. Kanubah, however, made it clear that the Press Union of Liberia will never lose its integrity and called on government officials who doubt the Union’s credibility to rethink their position.
At the same time, he welcomed representatives of the Ministry of Information, including Acting Minister Johnny S. Tarkpah, for attending the event. He expressed hope that their presence shows willingness to engage, not conflict.
“As a Union, we are not here to create confusion,” he said. “Our goal is to promote freedom for the good of the people.” Mr. Kanubah concluded by saying the PUL will remain focused on its mission, regardless of criticism or labeling. “We will not be distracted,” he said. “We will continue to stand for press freedom and the public interest.”
