The Ministry of Transport has launched a 15-day nationwide rail inspection exercise aimed at strengthening safety and operational standards across Liberia’s railway network. The exercise, which began Friday, August 22, 2025, covers rail corridors in Nimba, Bong, Grand Bassa, and Montserrado counties.

Two inspection teams comprising rail technicians and engineers have been dispatched under the supervision of Assistant Minister for Land and Rail Transport, Minister Rudolph Natt, Jr. The initiative, which is being carried out in collaboration with ArcelorMittal Liberia and China Union, is designed to improve rail safety compliance, protect infrastructure, and enhance operational efficiency.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the move follows an earlier assessment by the Division of Rail after an incident at kilometer 45.7 along the Nimba–Bassa rail corridor, which highlighted the need for closer cooperation between government agencies, operators, and communities.

To complement the inspection, the Ministry will roll out a community engagement campaign to educate residents on the dangers of trespassing, the importance of reporting suspicious activities, and the need to safeguard railway assets.  Plans are also underway to establish Community Liaison Committees that will serve as communication links between rail authorities and local residents.

Speaking to reporters, Transport Minister, Sirleaf R. Tyler assured the public of government’s commitment to strengthening safety and compliance across all modes of transport including land, air, and sea. Minister Tyler said the inspection exercise will be conducted within 15 days across Railroad counties.
