The Government of Liberia has formally established the National Tourism Authority of Liberia (NTAoL) through new legislation, emphasizing the importance of tourism as a key driver of economic growth and national branding. The Authority has a 90-day timeline to become fully operational, including setting up its headquarters, designing a budget, and recruiting staff.

This development removes tourism from the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT), where it has been marginalized. The NTAoL will operate independently, allowing for targeted programs and better resource allocation.

Ambassador Christopher Hayes Onanuga, appointed by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in 2024, has been instrumental in this transition. He spoke about the new era for Liberia, highlighting the country’s ownership of its cultural and environmental treasures.

Tourism, one of the world’s largest industries, can generate significant benefits for Liberia, including job creation, foreign exchange earnings, and stimulation of local businesses. Improved infrastructure and environmental protection are additional advantages that well-managed tourism can provide.

With the NTAoL in place, Liberia can attract foreign investment more effectively and engage with global tourism organizations to enhance its international profile. The next 90 days will be crucial for setting up the Authority and delivering tangible results as the world watches. Courtesy By Sylvester Choloplay
