The Ministry of Mines and Energy, through the Department of Mines and Exploration, has trained a new ‘Boat Operator’ for the Liberia Hydrological Service to enhance its function in collecting and distributing water resources information that leads to informed decision-making.
This includes water-related development such as flooding preparedness, drainage design, hydropower generation and agriculture, among others.
The training was part of a two-day exercise undertaken by the Liberia Hydrological Service (LHS), headed by Wainta Gwaikolo-Mayson. Director Mayson and the LHS conducted day one activities indoors at the central office of the Mines and Energy Ministry, while day two activities were conducted in the field.
During the field exercises, LHS Water Engineers and Technicians were drilled through important areas such as water level measurement using the staff gauge and tripod, which is a surveying instrument, and the discharge measurement using the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The ADCP is an instrument that uses sound waves to measure the velocity and discharge, or the flow of rivers.
Mines and Energy staff in the Liberia Hydrological Service were also trained on methods of processing hydrological data collected from the field. At the close of the two-day water quality management training, LHS Director Wanita Gwaikolo-Mayson expressed appreciation to the senior management team of the Ministry of Mines and Energy for providing the training opportunity.
He said given the significance of water resources to national development, it would be important to conduct such training periodically. The training ran from April 17 – 18, 2025.
