The Liberia National Police (LNP) is urging motorcyclists to assemble peacefully during the time of their pending planned protest. Inspector General of Police Col. Gregory O. W. Coleman in a release on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, urged a peaceful assembly and adherence to legal procedures when carrying out the protest.
According to him, the LNP is aware of discussions surrounding a planned protest by some motorcyclists in Monrovia under the auspices of the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia (SUMTUL) Inc. The Police IG stressed the importance of maintaining peace, upholding the rule of law, and prioritizing the safety of all residents in and around Monrovia.
He said while the LNP recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly as enshrined in Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, it is imperative that any planned protest adheres to the legal framework governing public demonstrations.
“The LNP, therefore, urges all motorcyclists intending to protest or assemble to formally notify the Ministry of Justice, the statutory authority responsible for maintaining national peace and security, for proper consideration,” said Col. Coleman.
He assured motorcyclists that once the necessary arrangements are made and approved, the police will fulfill its constitutional duty of ensuring security and safety for both the protestors and the general public.
At the same time, IG Coleman strongly warned all concerned motorcyclists against engaging in acts of violence, confrontation, or any activities that could disrupt public order.
Col. Coleman encouraged the general public to go about their normal business without fear, as the police remain actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders regarding the planned protest.
