A 30-year-old man, identified as Alex Melewon, is in police custody in Saclepea after being arrested for allegedly possessing $1,400 in counterfeit United States currency. The incident has sparked calls for vigilance among the public, particularly those involved in financial transactions.
According to preliminary information released by the Saclepea Police Depot, Melewon had traveled from Ganta to Saclepea via a commercial motorcyclist. He reportedly told the motorcyclist that he was on his way to visit his father and personally deliver some money. Melewon also identified himself as a money exchanger based in Ganta City, Nimba County.
The trouble began when Melewon allegedly attempted to exchange a $100 bill with the motorcyclist for Liberian Dollars upon arriving in Saclepea. The motorcyclist, suspecting the bill was not genuine, sought the opinion of a local money exchanger. The money exchanger confirmed his suspicions, identifying the bill as counterfeit.
The incident was immediately reported to the police, leading to Melewon’s arrest. A subsequent search revealed a total of $1,400 in counterfeit U.S. dollars in his possession. Melewon is currently being held at the Saclepea Police Depot and is expected to undergo a formal preliminary investigation into the matter.
