Waterside Business Community is Pleading with Monrovia City Corporation for urgent intervention amid looming Health Hazards and economic hardship. speaking to our reporter on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from a dirty street with garbage scattered everywhere, the business community of Waterside in Monrovia cried out for help as the area grapples with overwhelming dirt and filth. Several business owners expressed their frustration and concern over the health hazards and economic hardship caused by the unsanitary conditions.
Mark Massiquol, manager of a used clothes business: “The dirt is causing serious health problems and chasing away customers due to the filthiness. We urge the Mayor of Monrovia to intervene and save us from this nightmare.” Ma Patient, a local businesswoman said, “Since morning, I’ve been sitting in the dirt selling, and it’s affecting my health. The government should come and save us.” One concerned business owner, Joseph, painted a vivid picture of desperation:
”How can we make money to feed our families when dirt causes serious health hazards? We leave our homes every morning to find food, but buyers run away from dirt and ‘pupu’ water.” ”The economy is already hard, and unemployment is high. How can we hustle for our families when we can’t sell to pay our children’s school fees?”
Joseph’s words echo the sentiments of fellow business owners, who are pleading with authorities to intervene and restore dignity to their livelihoods. Waterside Market is the commercial hub in Monrovia where Liberians and foreign nationals gather to trade on a day-to-day basis. For time immemorial, the area has been faced with episodes of unsanitary crisis to an extent where marketers would literally sit in running faces water from clogged sewage thanks and overfilled drainage.
