During a session with the Liberian Senate Committee on National Security and Defense on May 19, 2025, the Commissioner General-designate of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Elijah F. Rufus, stated that if confirmed, his leadership would engage with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and other regional partners for technical support in addressing global migration trends that could undermine Liberia’s stability in the region.

Rufus mentioned that plans are in place to provide enhanced professional training for LIS officers. He also highlighted that his leadership has begun to gather intelligence on the influx of Burkinabe and other undocumented migrants in Liberia.

Addressing challenges faced by the LIS, Rufus emphasized his commitment to combating human trafficking and irregular migration in Liberia by collaborating with key stakeholders. Furthermore, he pledged to explore public and private partnerships to augment government funding, particularly for initiatives within Liberia’s territorial borders.

He requested the Senate Committee’s support and partnership in rehabilitating and constructing modern border facilities. The Commissioner General-designate envisions creating a resilient and efficient immigration system that upholds national security while promoting economic growth, in line with best practices.

However, after several questions and concerns from Committee members, the confirmation hearing for the LIS Commissioner General-designate was postponed. According to Committee Chairman Senator Momo Cyrus, the hearing will be rescheduled for another day and conducted behind closed doors.
