The Government of Liberia says it suspects recruitment activities targeting ex-Liberian warlords for subversive actions in neighboring Guinea.
Speaking Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the Ministry of Information regular press briefing, Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah said the discovery of the alleged activity was based on intelligence provided by the Guinean authorities with aid from the Liberian Joint security.
He said this information is backed by an Interpol release stating that a Guinean identified as Abraham Sheriff is one of the supporters of the recruitment process.
According to Minister Piah, he was apprehended along with one Zayzay Turey and handed them over to the Guinean authorities on November 3 and 8, 2024.
He said these actions on the part of the Government of Liberia were taken in the interest of national security, the safety of the people of Liberia and to prevent a recurrence of past conflicts.
“We must note that Liberia will no longer be used as launching parks for subversive activities against our neighbors,” he said, adding that the government also reaffirms its commitment to upholding constitutional duties and to protect lives and properties of all residents.
The Information Minister said not an inch of Liberian territory will be used to cause instability in any other country as Liberia knows the true meaning of war and is determined not to return to it.
“We will continue to strengthen our democracy and work to consolidate peace in our subregion,” he said.
He said that the Government of Liberia will continue to act within the security interests of the country at its height, calling on all citizens and residents to abide by, and respect the role of law.
