The National Identification Registry is expected to join more than 30 African countries to celebrate the National Identification Day to be observed throughout the republic. Speaking with reporters Tuesday, September 10, 2024 in Congo Town, Andrew Peters, NIR Executive Director, said the essence of Global ID Day is to raise worldwide awareness about the importance of unique identity and to bring to international attention the plight of millions of people who do not have legal identity.
According to Executive Director Peters, this year’s ID Day will be celebrated on Monday, September 16, 2024 at the Monrovia City Hall, under the global theme, “Celebrating the Right to be Visible.”
The NIR Executive Director said the day was firstly celebrated in Liberia on September I6, 2023, and this year will mark the second time it will be celebrated in the country. He disclosed that the entity has invited President Joseph N. Bokal to grace the occasion and to serve as the keynote speaker. “The Superintendents of the fifteen counties have been invited and they will be commissioned and certificated as ID Ambassadors in their counties,” Peters revealed.
Executive Director Peters said the function will be mainly to support national ID card activities by helping to take the issue of the importance of the ID card to the grass root level, where people can better understand the importance of the National ID Card using various local traditional methods of communication.
The NIR Boss indicated that the lD Day celebration will begin with a parade from 9th Street, Sinkor, beginning at 8 A. M. end at the Monrovia City Hall where the indoor program will be held. He encouraged all invitees/participants to arrive at the Petrol Trade Gas Station at 8:00 A.M. T- shirts for the parade will be distributed to participants upon arrival. “We also want to use this time to remind the general public that enrollment and issuance of National ID cards to citizens and legal foreign residents continues,” Peters said.
