President Joseph N. Boakai has admitted to debts owed by Liberia to the ECOWAS Community, but said that the country is making significant efforts in paying some of those arrears.
Speaking Monday, December 16, 2024 at the Roberts International Airport upon his arrival from the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, Nigeria, the Liberian leader said his government inherited the debts from the past government.
“Yes, Liberia is indebted to ECOWAS, but we have made some payments for which the country is in good standing with ECOWAS Community,” he said.
President Boakai applauded the Nigerian Government for their contribution to the entity by the payment of dues that has helped, and will help, the entity to move forward.
He also thanked the Chairman of ECOWAS for the warm embrace and cordial reception accorded the Liberian delegation upon arrival and stay in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, President Boakai is advocating for a single currency amongst the ECOWAS countries, something he said will help promote economic integration, stability and sustainable development across West Africa.
The Liberian leader said a unified currency would enhance trade, reduce economic disparities, and foster greater regional cooperation, ultimately contributing to peace and prosperity across the region.
Boakai said it would also strengthen economic resilience, support infrastructure development, and address pressing challenges such as unemployment, poverty and insecurity.
He said regional integration is the only pathway to sustainable development; adding that “a single currency will unite us economically and strategically, allowing us to face global challenges as one, cohesive entity.”
