The Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), led by Colonel Elijah F. Rufus, has initiated a nationwide registration process for Burkinabes living in Liberia. The presence of Burkinabes in Liberia is a significant issue due to their increasing numbers across the country.
Reports indicate that thousands of Burkinabes are residing in Liberia illegally, having entered the country without going through the proper immigration procedures. As the situation has become increasingly concerning, the LIS has launched this nationwide registration to determine the total number of Burkinabes in Liberia.
Phase one of the registration has begun in Southwestern Liberia, where thousands of Burkinabes are participating. This initial phase covers Grand Gedeh, Maryland, River Gee, Nimba, and Bong Counties. Local county authorities have reported that each of these five counties has a considerable number of Burkinabes living there illegally.
The initiative aligns with the ECOWAS Free Movement Agreement and aims to accurately assess the number of Burkinabes in Liberia, consistent with global immigration best practices. Since the process began, many Liberians have expressed their appreciation to the LIS for undertaking this initiative.
