President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has summoned the 55th Legislature to a ten-day Special Session to debate the proposed urgent printing of additional Liberian Dollar banknotes.

In a formal communication to House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon dated April 7, 2026, the President invoked Article 32(b) of the Constitution to convene lawmakers from Thursday, April 9 to April 23, 2026, well ahead of their scheduled return in May.

The extraordinary move underscores growing concern within the Executive over the potential economic consequences of expanding the money supply.  Also, the proposal to print additional currency has raised alarms among economists and policymakers, who warn it could influence inflation, exchange rate instability, and public trust in the Liberian dollar.

“This session is convened to deliberate and act upon matters of urgent national concern, signalling the urgency surrounding the currency issue,” he added. The Legislature had already adjourned since March 19, 2026, after completing its first-quarter agenda.

However, the Executive now argues that developments surrounding liquidity pressures and monetary policy demand immediate legislative scrutiny. Observers say the Special Session will represent a critical moment for lawmakers, as they weigh the risks and benefits of increasing the volume of Liberian banknotes in circulation.

While proponents argue the move could ease cash shortages and support transactions, critics caution that without strong monetary controls, it may trigger inflationary pressures and weaken the currency’s value.

However, the President urged members of the House of Representatives to act decisively in the national interest, emphasizing the far-reaching implications of their decisions. “These proposals are time-sensitive and cannot await the resumption of the regular session,” the communication stressed. As the session opens, all eyes will be on Capitol Hill, where deliberations over currency printing are expected to shape the direction of Liberia’s economic stability in the months ahead.
