The Ministry of Labour has launched the revision exercise of the country’s current minimum wage in line with the Government ‘ARREST AGENDA’ which, among others, seeks to improve the general minimum wage of workers in both private and public sectors to commensurate with present economic conditions of the country.
A Labour Ministry press release issued over the weekend disclosed that the two-day Minimum Wage Revision exercise was held in Gbarnga City, Bong County, bringing together stakeholders on the Minimum Wage Board, including the Liberian Chamber of Commerce, Civil Society and an outstanding legal practitioner, among others, for a five-year tenure.
The release said the Ministry of Labour which chairs The Tripartite Council, making up The Minimum Wage Board, coordinated the symposium under the stewardship of The Head of Secretariat, Jerome Kollie, with Assistant Labour Minister for Administration Rufus Freeman representing Labour Minister, Cllr. Cooper W. Kruah, Sr.
The release emphasized that deliberations centered on the need to amend the current Minimum Wage of US$142.00 monthly to ensure an appreciable adjustment that will commensurate with present economic conditions of the Liberian Labour sector and international standard.
Delegates at the strategic workshop are further quoted by the release as setting the basis for a more comprehensive nation-wide dialogue, aimed at deriving an amendment in the current Minimum Wage appreciable to both employment conglomerates and workers.
Minimum Wage Board Head of Secretariat, Jerome Kollie and Assistant Labour Minister for Administration Rufus Freeman, both commended delegates at the symposium, assuring more widespread deliberations that will garner sufficient public and stakeholders’ opinions on the possible amendments to the current Minimum Wage. Meanwhile, the next stage of the deliberations will be held in Kakata, Margibi County.
