The Liberian Senate Statutory Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims and Petitions, has scheduled the Chief Justice-Designate, Justice Yamie Q, Gbeisay, to appear before the Committee for commencement of his confirmation proceedings on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 1:00pm in the Senate’s Chambers.

According to a released issued on Friday, July 11, 2025, the Committee’s action was triggered by a communication sent to the Senate by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, nominating Justice Gbeisay as Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia following the retirement of Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh, who has met the required constitutional age limit of seventy years to serve as Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia.

Justice Gbeisay, who is currently serving as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, will appear before the Senate for Senators to test his suitability for the job, as well as to share his vision for the position of Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia.

Meanwhile, Senate’s Committee Chairman on Judiciary, Sen. Cllr. Augustine S. Chea, has encouraged the public to follow the proceedings, as the Senate has always endeavored to remain transparent, apolitical and independent in the discharge of its oversight responsibility, as well as other legislative responsibilities. It can be recalled that President Boakai nominated Associate Justice Gbeisay as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia in late June.

According to a release issued by the Executive Mansion on Monday, June 30, 2025, the nomination was made per Article 54(c) of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, which grants the President the authority to appoint the Chief Justice, Associate Justices, and Judges of Subordinate Courts.

Additionally, the nomination aligns with Article 72(b) of the Constitution, which mandates the retirement of Justices upon reaching the age of seventy. In a letter addressed to Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, President Boakai described Justice Gbeisay as a “distinguished jurist [who] has demonstrated exemplary integrity, profound legal acumen, and commitment to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution.”

President Boakai called on the Honorable Liberian Senate to “expeditiously consider and confirm this nomination.” Justice Gbeisay’s appointment, if confirmed, will mark a continuation of his longstanding judicial service and dedication to the Liberian legal system, the Executive Mansion said.
