The Speaker of the 55th Legislature Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, along with esteemed members, convened with the United States House Democracy Partnership’s Technical Assistance Consultancy Team at his Capital Building Office.
The primary agenda of the meeting revolved around the provision of short-term technical assistance consultancy.
The focus lay on enhancing citizen participation, particularly through their Civil Society organizations, in the budgetary process.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Speaker Fallah emphasized the critical need for civic education. He underscored that the lack of such education poses significant challenges for lawmakers and citizens alike in understanding the functions and responsibilities of representatives.
He highlighted a prevalent misconception among citizens, wherein lawmakers are expected to undertake tasks such as road construction, healthcare bill payments, and even purchasing diapers. Deputy Speaker Fallah clarified that these tasks are beyond the three cardinal responsibilities of lawmakers.
In response to these challenges, some lawmakers are advocating for a USAID-facilitated Constituency Outreach program.
This initiative aims to provide lawmakers across the country with a platform to engage with citizens and foster a deeper understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
The meeting concluded on a note of commitment towards fostering greater civic education and participation, vital for a thriving democracy.
