The Minister of Information has cautioned religious leaders in Liberia to separate religion from politics, particularly when it comes to national and legal issues. Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia on November 18, 2025, Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah said religion should not be used to determine national and legal issues in the country because doing so may have a negative impact, judging from the history of religious divisiveness that plunged the country into a dark time.
According to the Minister, religion is not a unifying factor in society; rather, it is a divisive one that people should stop using to decide legal issues because justice is blind and has no attachment to any religious institution or organization. He emphasized that religious leaders have a critical role to play in promoting peace, tolerance, and understanding among their followers rather than encouraging them to use violence and hide under a religious umbrella to justify acts of violence.
The Minister warned that politicizing religion can be detrimental to the country, as it can lead to division, conflict, and even violence. He wants religious leaders to focus on promoting spiritual growth and development rather than engaging in political activities and making statements that have the propensity to undermine the peace.
The Minister’s statement comes as a result of a court eviction on November 13, 2025, in Red Light, Paynesville, where there was violence between the police and residents who are believed to be members of the Muslim religion. The police made multiple arrests, and the incident sparked a national conversation.
