To improve healthcare access for low-income earners, the physically challenged, and the general population of Liberia, the Joseph Boakai-led government is set to launch the National Health Insurance Scheme.
This initiative was first announced by the president during his State of the Nation Address in January 2025. The scheme will be implemented by the Liberia Telecommunication Authority (LTA) in collaboration with the Digital Transformation Project.Abdulai Kamara, the Acting Chairman of the LTA, announced that a pilot project will begin on July 1, 2025, simultaneously in three counties: Montserrado, Bomi, and Margibi. The project will be funded by the LTA and will last for six months, benefiting up to five thousand individuals, including the disabled, blind, and mute, specifically those at the Group of 77 on Newport Street in Monrovia.
In an interview with this publication, Chairman Kamara emphasized that after the pilot, a comprehensive policy will be developed to cover every Liberian under the National Health Insurance Scheme.
He also revealed that the National Insurance Company of Liberia (NICOL) will act as the executing agency for the scheme, utilizing modern technology. He highlighted that this technological approach will enhance accountability within the system and provide the government with valuable insights into the scheme’s operations.
