To scrutinize public expenditure and to tighten fiscal discipline, the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) opened a five-day Public Expenditure Review (PER) Validation Workshop in Kakata, Margibi County, on Tuesday, January 6, 2025.  Led by the Department of Economic Management, the workshop brings together key stakeholders to review government spending patterns, validate data, and sharpen policy recommendations to improve efficiency and accountability in public financial management.

Opening the session, Assistant Minister for Economic Management Henry D.Z. Yanquoi described the validation exercise as a “critical milestone” in finalizing the PER, a core government tool for assessing whether public resources are delivering value for money and aligning expenditures with Liberia’s national development priorities.

Yanquoi said the PER process provides a rare opportunity for institutions to collectively review findings, correct gaps, and ensure the final report is accurate, balanced, and policy-relevant. He emphasized that inclusive participation and technical scrutiny are significant for strengthening the credibility of the document and its usefulness in decision-making.

The Assistant Minister highlighted the importance of domestic resource mobilization and prudent fiscal management, noting that the PER will identify inefficiencies in spending while guiding reforms to support sustainable economic growth and improved service delivery, particularly in critical sectors such as education and social services.

He urged participants to remain fully engaged throughout the five-day exercise, emphasizing that the success of the PER depends on shared ownership, open dialogue, and constructive feedback from all stakeholders. The MFDP Department of Economic Management, in a statement, commended participating institutions for their cooperation and commitment, and reaffirmed its readiness to provide technical support to ensure the timely completion and eventual publication of the Public Expenditure Review. The outcome of the validation workshop is expected to shape future fiscal reforms and influence how Liberia allocates and manages public resources in the years ahead.
