Former Lawmakers of the House of Representatives have established a Special Mediatory Committee tasked to resolve the leadership impasse at the House of Representatives.

In a release dated November 11, 2024, the Special Mediatory Committee said it will make efforts to address the political standoff within the House of Representatives.

It can be recalled that on October 17, 2024, 47 Representatives signed a resolution to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, a situation that has since sparked serious division among lawmakers.

The release said that the group aimed at maintaining the peace and stability of the nation, convened to form the committee.

According to the release, the primary objective of this Special Mediatory Committee is to intervene in the ongoing constitutional and political crisis at the House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature, Republic of Liberia.

The committee has been granted the authority to engage all parties involved in the dispute to seek an amicable resolution that aligns with the interests of the Liberian people.

The following individuals have been appointed as members of the Special Mediatory Committee: Professor Edwin T. Juah, Alomiza M. Ennos and Atty. Rufus D. Neufville.

The committee has been charged with the responsibility of diligently working with all factions involved in the deadlock to prevent an impending constitutional crisis and preserve Liberia’s young democracy.

Additionally, the committee has been instructed to engage with the leadership of the Senate, as well as other local and international partners, to facilitate the resolution of the impasse at the House of Representatives.

According to the former lawmakers, the move is intended to safeguard the nation’s democratic principles and ensure stability in the legislative process.
