The Government of Liberia (GoL) has broken silence on the recent Supreme Court ruling in the case involving embattled House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and Majority Bloc Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, urging lawmakers to heed the ruling and use it as a foundation to craft a peaceful, political resolution to the crisis.
While calling on lawmakers to heed the High Court’s ruling, the government has reaffirmed its respect for the independence of all three branches of government.
Speaking Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT) regular press briefing in Monrovia, Information Minister Jerolimek Matthew Piah disclosed the government’s efforts to engage stakeholders, including the Traditional Council, for common ground.
The minister also called on lawmakers to rise above personal and political interests and return to legislative business, adding that Liberia’s recovery and growth require collective sacrifice.
He explained that the road to national recovery requires everyone’s efforts, as the constitutional oath demands service above self, while expressing gratitude to legislative members who have already recommitted to their responsibilities.
The Information Minister narrated that the Boakai-Koung Administration is concerned that the prolonged standoff in the House is distracting the country’s development agenda and weakening public trust in democratic governance. Minister Piah added, “This internal dispute has the potential to undermine the progress we’re making in national development and governance.”
